The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) or just Ninja Turtles are four fictional bipedal humanoid talking turtles, practicing ninjutsu and various Japanese martial arts. They are guided by their sensei Splinter, a bipedal humanoid talking rat.

The franchise was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in November 1983, and the first comic debuted in May 1984, published by Mirage Studios.

Their names are Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. Each turtle wears a bandana of specific colour, except the Mirage Comics, where all four turtles wear red bandanas. They also carry different weapons.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles recieved major international popularity during the late-1980's and early-1990's.
